Ethics of Defending Self

2 min read

Contrary to popular belief and if you stay involved long enough, you begin to understand that Martial Arts and self-defense start to become less about defending yourself, and more about defending others, ...possibly from YOU. If you commit yourself to hard training, you will suffer and endure enough to finally realize that you CAN finally hold your own and possibly more. Your fears of other persons will slowly dissolve and your concerns towards bad guys and criminals will only be a simple thought of, "I wish he would".

When we discover that we no longer need to fear the potential or intentions of any other human being again in our life, our dynamic changes. We finally feel as if we can breathe because we in fact are starting to breathe fuller without haste or a tense gut. We notice that we can see and notice more because we are no longer rushing in and out of locations because someone there makes you uncomfortable. Now no one can force you to feel uncomfortable and the thought alone makes you even more comfortable, ...more calm. So calm that you then begin to recognize that the only true threat in every immediate area that you frequent is you. You don't have to worry about anyone because of your combat abilities, but they have to worry about you. At least they should.

And this is when our mission as a Martial Artist converts from being ready to protect ourselves from strangers and all others to protecting strangers and all others from ourselves. We soften our tone, tolerate their foolishness, pardon their insults, disregard their incompetence, and sometimes maneuver our presence at certain locations, to avoid possible confrontations or even discomfort in others that could lead to our ending up hurting them. And it is when this moment has been reached that we have mastered our own ego and elevated mentally and spiritually.
